Planning the holidays with an aging loved one who has Alzheimers can bring unique challenges.Still, with thoughtfulness and patience, you can create a safe, inclusive, and joyful season for everyone. Here are some strategies to consider for holidays with an aging loved one:Keep it simple!First, simplify traditional holiday activities.

While traditions might have been elaborate, focusing on smaller, manageable tasks allows your loved one to participate without feeling overwhelmed.Decorating cookies, folding napkins, or setting the table can bring a sense of purpose and joy.Earlier is betterNext, consider adjusting the timing of events.Early evenings are often better for people with Alzheimers, as late gatherings can increase confusion and anxiety.

Keeping holiday gatherings short and familiar also helps reduce stress and fatigue.Keep calm and carry on!Familiarity is comforting for those with Alzheimers, so incorporate traditions that your loved one may remember.Play familiar holiday music or look through old family photos together to create moments of connection. Most importantly, focus on creating a calm, supportive environment.Minimize loud noises, avoid harsh lighting, and ensure space for rest if needed.

Planning with your loved ones needs in mind can create a warm, inclusive atmosphere that honors the holiday spirit and strengthens family bonds.Need a few ideas? We have included some additional holiday celebration ideas and suggestions HERE.The Hurley Elder Care Law teamworks with our client families to create an environment that ensures the greatest success for our clients with dementia. Also, many families call our office after the holidays, as this is a time when they notice significant changes in their loved ones and realize they need the assistance of an elder law attorney. Please call us at 404-843-0121 with any questions and to get ahead of stressful situations.
