As the 2024 presidential election approaches, several legislative issues affecting older Americans are gaining attention.Understanding these key topics can help older individuals and their families plan for the future and advocate for necessary changes. So what upcoming legislation impacting older Americans is being considered?Healthcare Costs and Medicare ExpansionHealthcare remains a critical issue, especially for older Americans who rely heavily on Medicare.

Legislation is being proposed at both the federal and state levels to address rising healthcare costs. Some proposals aim to expand Medicare benefits to include dental, vision, and hearing services, while others focus on capping prescription drug prices.Georgians should monitor these proposals with hope, as they might bring relief from high out-of-pocket expenses.

Emory has published a review of significant health policy issues nationally and in Georgia.Social Security and Retirement SecuritySocial security is another area of concern.Currently, the Social Security Board of Trustees projects program costs to rise by 2035 so that taxes will be enough to pay for only 75percent of scheduled benefits if no changes are made.Upcoming legislation may address ways to strengthen Social Security, such as adjusting payroll taxes or benefits.

These discussions could profoundly impact retirement planning for current and future retirees.Georgias lawmakers are also exploring ways to support retirees through state-level programs and incentives.Long-term Care and Aging ServicesThe need for quality long-term care is growing, prompting new legislative measures focusing on caregiving support and funding for aging services. This includes improving home and community-based services and providing financial relief for family caregivers.

Georgia legislators are examining policies to bolster the states long-term care infrastructure, potentially increasing support for older residents.Older Americans and their families must stay informed as these legislative issues evolve.Engaging in conversations with elected officials and participating in the legislative process can help ensure policies reflect the aging populations needs.Hurley Elder Care Law works with clients to help them find, obtain, and pay for long-term care.We also teach our client families how to advocate for their loved ones to get the best care possible.
