Social Security scams targeting older adults are on the rise, often exploiting their vulnerability and trust.Scammers use tactics like impersonating Social Security officers, claiming the victims benefits are at risk.These Social Security scams can lead to devastating financial loss and emotional distress.Social Security Scam trendsThe Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released its quarterly report on scam trends, including 27,000 scam allegations in the second quarter of 2024; about 45% claimed a problem with a persons Social Security number.
Also alarming is that 17% of cases mentioned a problem with Social Security benefits, and one-third of the scams used official-looking documents or images such as the Social Security logo.To avoid becoming a victim, its essential to follow a few preventive steps:Only provide personal information over the phone if you initiated the call.Be skeptical of unsolicited offers, especially those involving money.Government agencies like the Social Security Administration will never threaten you with immediate legal action or demand payment over the phone.Monitor bank and Social Security statements regularly for any suspicious activity.Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts and enable two-factor authentication.These bad actors have gotten very clever and convincing.By staying vigilant and educated, older adults can protect themselves from becoming victims of these harmful scams.Hurley Elder Care Law is concerned by the increased phone calls from distressed scam victims and their families.Please take steps to protect yourself before it is too late.
